Thomas Dray Price Obituary – Austin police have identified the individual they fatally shot in Northwest Austin shortly after midnight on April 27, as stated in a press release. No other individuals were harmed, as mentioned by interim Police Chief Robin Henderson during a press briefing held hours after the incident.
Henderson explained that the situation unfolded late Friday night when authorities received reports at 11:34 p.m. and 11:42 p.m. regarding loud noise and music emanating from vehicles on the northern side of the Summer Grove apartment complex situated at 7905 San Felipe Blvd, close to U.S. 183 and McNeil Drive, in Williamson County.
Another 911 call was made around 12:14 a.m., alerting law enforcement that 44-year-old Thomas Dray Price was armed and wandering around the complex, the release detailed. Callers reported hearing gunshots and witnessing Price holding four to five men at gunpoint. Subsequently, police were dispatched following the third 911 call.
Upon arriving at the location at approximately 12:22 a.m., officers commenced a search of the complex for Price and any potential victims. Initially, they located several men who were reportedly held at gunpoint by Price. Shortly after, Price emerged from a building’s breezeway while brandishing a firearm. The release indicated that Price failed to adhere to the officers’ instructions to drop his weapon and raise his hands.
Instead, Price aimed his gun in the direction of the officers, prompting two of them to discharge their firearms at him on the spot, according to the release. Following the shooting, a SWAT team was summoned to the apartment from which Price had emerged, Henderson mentioned, but no other individuals were discovered.
Medical assistance was provided to Price after the shooting, and he was restrained with handcuffs, the release disclosed. He was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was declared deceased at 1:39 a.m., the release stated. The incident was recorded on the officers’ body cameras, with the footage scheduled for release on May 10, in line with the police department’s policy of 10 business days. In accordance with departmental regulations, the officers involved in the shooting will be reassigned to administrative duties. One of the officers has been a part of the department for a certain period.
