Chase Kinchen Obituary – The Vermillion Police Department has disclosed the identity of the deceased man who was shot at a residence in the 600 block of Catalina on Tuesday. As stated in the news release, the individual was identified as 38-year-old Chase Kinchen, a resident of Vermillion. Kinchen unlawfully entered the home while carrying a firearm, which violated a protection order that prohibited him from contacting the resident or being within 500 feet of the premises.
According to the officers, Kinchen posed a threat to both the resident and a guest present at the scene. The guest sought refuge in an attached garage, with Kinchen in pursuit. It was during this pursuit that Kinchen fired his weapon at the guest.
In response, the other individual present at the scene retrieved a handgun from a vehicle parked in the garage and shot Kinchen. Tragically, Kinchen was pronounced dead at the location.
Law enforcement authorities have confirmed that all individuals involved in this incident have been identified and are cooperating with the police investigation.
However, the identity of the third individual involved in the incident is being protected under Marsy’s Law and will not be disclosed to the public.
The investigation into this matter involved witness interviews and an autopsy, which were conducted by the South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation, Vermillion Police Department, and Clay County Sheriff’s Office.
