CHARLOTTE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — One of Charlotte City Council’s two Republican members is leaving his position for a Trump administration job.
Tariq Bokhari is planning to resign within the next few weeks to serve as the number two leader in the Federal Transit Administration, the councilmember confirmed with Queen City News on Tuesday.
Bokhari was first elected to the council in 2017, representing District 6. He has served on the Jobs and Economic Development committee as well as the Budget, Governance and Intergovernmental Relations committee.
The outspoken councilmember has been a critic of Charlotte’s past transit plans and the proposed one-cent transit sales tax increase to pay for the Red Line. Bokhari has also clashed with Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Chief Johnny Jennings over providing ballistic outer carry vests for officers.
He has also contributed to the creation of Moffat Park in his district, the creation of SouthPark Community Partners, SouthPark After 5 and many safety and placemaking initiatives. Bokhari created leading workforce training programs that have generated over $30M in upward mobility investments without taxpayer dollars.
