Amaiyah Sumlin Obituary, Death; – A woman passed away on Saturday, six days after sustaining critical injuries from a shooting at an apartment in south Birmingham.
Another woman has been in custody since turning herself in to the police on charges of attempted murder and is now awaiting a formal murder charge. The victim has been identified as 23-year-old Amaiyah Sumlin, a resident of Birmingham.
Officers from the South Precinct were dispatched at 6:18 a.m. on Sunday, April 6, following reports of a shooting in the 2800 block of Riverview Road, as stated by Sgt. LaQuitta Wade. This location is part of an apartment complex situated off U.S. 280. Upon arrival, they discovered Sumlin with a gunshot wound to the head.
Birmingham Fire and Rescue Services responded promptly and transported her to UAB Hospital, where she was treated for life-threatening injuries. Sumlin succumbed to her injuries on Saturday, April 12, at 6:22 p.m. in the hospital.
According to Wade, the initial investigation indicates that a physical confrontation occurred during a gathering, leading to the victim being shot by the suspect, who fled the scene prior to the arrival of law enforcement.
The suspect, identified as 22-year-old Ivry Maria Jelks, later voluntarily surrendered to officers at the Birmingham Police Headquarters. Jelks was placed on a 48-hour felony hold at the Birmingham City Jail.
On Monday, April 7, detectives specializing in felony assault presented the case details to the Shelby County District Attorney’s Office, which subsequently issued a warrant for attempted murder. Jelks has been booked into the Shelby County Jail, where she remains in custody on a bond set at $180,000. Wade noted that investigators are now pursuing a murder warrant.
