A messy storm expected to bring snow and mixed precipitation on midday Tuesday shut down numerous schools across the state and led to more than a dozen towns dismissing early.

A winter weather advisory issued for most of Connecticut is in effect from noon on Tuesday until 7 a.m. on Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service. The advisory extended across most of the state with the exception of the coastline.

The forecast called for up to two inches of snow and mixed precipitation that could affect the Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning commutes, the advisory stated. The shoreline was expected to get a coating of precipitation. The storm could also bring the potential of freezing rain.

More than 70 cities and towns across the state shut down schools for the day, including those in Ansonia, Avon, Berlin, Bloomfield, Bristol, Cheshire, Cromwell, East Hartford, Enfield, Farmington, Glastonbury, Hartford, Manchester, Meriden, Middletown, New Britain, Newington, Plainville, Simsbury, South Windsor, Southington, Vernon, Waterbury and Windsor Locks.

More than a dozen school systems were expected to dismiss early, including those in Ashford, Columbia, Eastford, Killingly, Mansfield, Monroe, Newtown, Plainfield, Putnam, Shelton, Willington, Windham, Woodstock and others.

The winter weather is expected to be followed by unseasonably mild temperatures into the weekend and next week.
