Northwest Catholic senior midfielder Maeve Staunton was one of eight girls soccer players from Connecticut named to the United Soccer Coaches All-American team.
Eight Connecticut boys were also named to the team.
Staunton, who will play soccer at UConn next year, helped Northwest Catholic to three state championship games (2022, 2024 and 2025) but the Lions finished as runner-up all three times, including a 3-2 loss to Foran this year in the Class M final. She is also a key player on the basketball team, which has won three state titles.
Staunton scored 62 goals and had 51 assists in her career at Northwest.
“Above all is Maeve’s first touch, control under pressure, and ability to dominate in outnumbered situations,” Northwest Catholic coach Steve Carnes said in a release. “Her ability to control and manipulate the ball is truly professional-level quality. She has the rare ability to completely take over a match.”
Other girls honored as All-Americans from the state were: Westminster defender Maya Goddard, Miss Porter’s defender Bella Salina, Mercy midfielder Molly Benson, St. Joseph midfielder Taryn Czick, Simsbury midfielder Addison Girard, New Canaan forward Clare Greisen and East Catholic forward Anya Tansil.
On the boys side were Xavier goalkeeper Andrew Sobieski, Suffield Academy defender Gavin Baer, Woodstock Academy defender Oscar Pearman, Greenwich midfielder Francisco Luzuriaga, Stonington midfielder Salvatore Alessio, Morgan forward Jonathan Gutierrez, Bunnell forward Mael Pierre-Paul and South Windsor forward Hayden Xhokaxhiu.
