A scooter operator has died after a motor vehicle allegedly veered into his path, causing a collision, and then fled the scene in Hamden on Sunday afternoon.
Patrol units were dispatched to a motor vehicle collision involving a motor scooter on Mix Avenue around 4:38 p.m. on Sunday near the south entrance to the Broadmoore Apartments, according to the Hamden Police Department.
Responding officers found the scooter’s operator, identified as 34-year-old Shareef Johnson of Meriden, suffering from life-threatening injuries. He was transported to an hospital where he was dead shortly after his arrival, police said.
According to police, an initial investigation determined that Johnson was traveling south on Mix Avenue when a vehicle that was exiting the Broadmoore Apartments’ south entrance allegedly veered into his path.
Following the crash, the driver of the motor vehicle momentarily stopped but then allegedly fled the scene heading north on Mix Avenue, police said.
The suspect vehicle has been located by the Hamden Police Department, according to police.
Members of the Hamden Accident Reconstruction Team responded to the scene and are conducting the ongoing investigation.
