YORK COUNTY, S.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — The State Law Enforcement Division (SLED) is investigating after a woman died while in custody in York County on Wednesday. According to the York County Sheriff’s Office, the 40-year-old woman was at the detention center since Feb. 19, 2015, on charges of possession of marijuana and fentanyl.
Authorities report shortly after 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 26, York County detention center staff reportedly discovered the inmate unresponsive.
After checking her vitals, the sheriff’s office said life-saving measures were initiated. EMS was called to the scene and transported the woman to an area hospital.
The woman passed away at the hospital just before 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, the YCSO said.
SLED has been called in to investigate the death, per policy.
Further details, including the inmate’s identity, will not be released until the investigation is complete and the Coroner’s Office notifies the family, the sheriff’s office said.
