CHARLOTTE (CHARLOTTE SPORTS LIVE) — The Queen City is set to welcome a professional women’s basketball team, sources confirmed with Charlotte Sports Live.
UpShot, owned by Zawyer Sports & Entertainment, is a four-team women’s basketball league with teams out of Savannah, Ga., Jacksonville, Fl., and recently announced Greensboro, N.C.
Zawyer Sports owns the newly named Gastonia Ghost Peppers and Charlotte Checkers. The group also owns teams in the other cities in the UpShot league- Savannah Ghost Pirates, Greensboro Gargoyles, and Jacksonville Icemen.
Sources tell Charlotte Sports Live the Charlotte squad will play games out of Bojangles Coliseum. According to the league’s website, games will start being played in 2026 and fans will be able to submit suggestions for team names.

The last time Charlotte was home to professional women’s basketball was in 2006 for the Charlotte Sting’s final season in the WNBA. They spent 10 seasons in Charlotte where they made the finals only one time in 2001 but lost to the LA Sparks.
The team spent the first nine seasons in the Charlotte Coliseum before moving to Charlotte Bobcats Arena for its final season.
