A woman was killed and seven people were injured late Thursday in an Israeli airstrike that targeted a house in southern Lebanon, according to local media reports. Lebanon’s official National News Agency initially reported that a woman had died and seven others were wounded, some seriously. The identities and the severity of the injuries of the victims have not yet been provided.
Witnesses told Anadolu that Israeli warplanes struck an area between the towns of Deir Qanoun En Nahr and Jnaita in the Tyre district. The target was a two-story house, prompting emergency teams to rush to the scene. Israeli Army Radio confirmed that the Israeli Air Force targeted a building in the town of Jnaita, resulting in casualties.
Earlier Thursday, Israel had vowed to retaliate against attacks by the Lebanese group Hezbollah, asserting that both Hezbollah and Lebanon were responsible for the border escalation. This came in the wake of the assassination of a senior Hezbollah commander, Taleb Sami Abdullah, by Israel two days prior.
Tensions have sharply risen between Hezbollah and the Israeli army since Abdullah’s killing. In retaliation, Hezbollah launched 150 rockets into northern Israel on Thursday, following an earlier barrage of 215 rockets and drone attacks on Wednesday. This marked the largest single-day rocket launch by Hezbollah since the confrontations began on October 8, 2023. Hezbollah’s rockets have caused numerous fires in northern Israel, threatening strategic facilities, according to the Israeli newspaper Haaretz.
Tensions along Lebanon’s border with Israel have escalated amid these cross-border attacks as Tel Aviv continues its offensive on the Gaza Strip. This offensive has resulted in over 37,200 deaths since last October following a cross-border attack by the Palestinian group Hamas.
