Born in Philadelphia on December 23, 1936, Father Dougherty was the son of William and Rose (Rechner) Dougherty. His early education at St. Bernard Parish School and Northeast Catholic High School paved the way for his religious journey. In 1954, he joined the Oblates of St. Francis de Sales, making his first profession of vows in 1955 and his perpetual profession in 1958.
Academic and Theological Pursuits
Father Dougherty was a lifelong learner with a passion for knowledge. He earned a bachelor’s degree in natural science from Niagara University, followed by a bachelor’s degree and Licentiate in Sacred Theology from the University of Fribourg in Switzerland. His academic journey continued with a master’s degree in French from Villanova University and further studies at DeChantal Hall in Lewiston, N.Y. Ordained to the priesthood on April 3, 1965, at the Church of San Michel in Fribourg by Bishop Louis-Severin Haller, Father Dougherty embarked on a lifelong mission of education and spiritual guidance.

In 1973, Father Dougherty joined the faculty of Bishop Ireton High School in Alexandria, where he continued to innovate in education.
