NORTH CAROLINA (QUEEN CITY NEWS) – As leaders in Washington, D.C. prepare to certify the results of the 2024 presidential election, federal judges continue to hear cases stemming from the attack on the U.S. Capitol building on Jan. 6, 2021. The largest prosecution in Justice Department history has yielded more than 1,500 cases and hundreds of convictions for people who participated in the insurrection.
The upcoming inauguration of President-Elect Donald Trump puts the future of the sentences and cases still to be tried into question. He made several promises on the campaign trail to issue some pardons for participants he believed were treated too harshly. He has yet to explain which rioters may be granted clemency.
Justice Department officials said they continue to make arrests related to the insurrection as they identify more individuals seen on camera in attendance at the U.S. Capitol.
Dozens of North Carolinians are among those serving time, paying restitutions or awaiting sentencing. Here’s where their cases stand four years after the riot.
