HICKORY, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — North Carolina’s first-ever Whataburger broke ground on Tuesday.
The Texas-based fast-food chain is opening in Hickory along U.S. Hwy. 70 near the Academy Sports & Outdoors.
Officials began filing permits back in early 2024.
The chain’s new president and CEO explained why they are excited about opening in our area.
“We talk about price care and love,” Debbie Stroud said. “We love serving our customers. Hickory is the perfect place for all of those things around community to come together.”
According to the Charlotte Business Journal, executives plan to open eight North Carolina locations this year. Four of them will be in the Charlotte area, including one on Albemarle Road near I-485.
Whataburger sued a local burger chain with a similar name in June: Cabarrus County-based What-A-Burger.
Whataburger has more than 1,000 locations in 16 states.
