His talent was recognized on three occasions as he was named to the prestigious All-Tournament Team, a testament to his skill and dedication to the game.
On the international stage, Ward’s achievements were equally impressive. In 2006, he was named to the ISC Second All-World Team as a pitcher, and the following year, he earned the title of Second Team All-American at the ASA National Championship. Ward’s international success continued with the Parry Island Hawks in 2012, where he played a pivotal role in the team’s ISC II Championship victory, earning both Tournament MVP and Most Outstanding Pitcher honors. In the ISC Legends 50+ division, he was named MVP in both 2018 and 2022, further cementing his status as one of the game’s greats.
Ward’s dominance was also felt in the St. John’s Men’s Fastball League, where his list of accomplishments reads like a hall of fame induction itself. He was named Rookie of the Year in 1988 and continued to build on that early promise with countless accolades, including Sportsmanship & Ability awards, multiple Triple Crowns of Batting and Pitching, seven Regular Season MVPs, ten Playoff MVPs, and eleven All-League Team Selections. He played for 17 years in the Senior A St. John’s Senior Hockey League and was part of five Herder championship-winning teams in 1990, 1995, 1996, 2002, and 2005. His stellar defensive play was recognized in 2002 when he was named the top defenseman in the West Coast Senior Hockey League. Ward’s athletic prowess and leadership on the ice and diamond earned him a well-deserved spot in the Sport Newfoundland Hall of Fame in 2019.
Away from the field and rink, Ward was a dedicated professional who served his community with distinction. He worked for over 20 years in the Real Estate and Financial Services industry, following his graduation from Memorial University. His contributions to municipal government further exemplified his commitment to bettering his community, both in Torbay, where he lived, and throughout Newfoundland.
Ward’s family, friends, and colleagues remember him not only for his athletic accomplishments but for his generosity, humility, and commitment to those around him. His wife, Karen, and children, Cassidy, Samuel, and Makay, were always his greatest pride, and he was a loving father and husband. His presence will be sorely missed not only in Newfoundland but across North America, where he left a lasting impression on everyone he met.
Ward Gosse’s legacy will forever be etched in the history of Newfoundland sports. His contributions to the athletic community, his leadership, and his unwavering love for his family and friends will not be forgotten. He was a true champion both on and off the field.
