Vernon – In a daring incident that unfolded last Friday on I-84 east, a 19-year-old driver was arrested after reaching a staggering speed of 115 miles per hour. The reckless driving incident caught the attention of state police and left onlookers astounded. The incident began near Exit 66 in Vernon around 8:10 p.m. State troopers, who were actively enforcing the speed limit in the area, spotted a red Audi A7 zooming down the highway at an alarming speed of 115 mph.
The troopers quickly realized the danger posed by the speeding vehicle and immediately attempted to pull it over. However, instead of complying with the traffic stop, the driver of the Audi A7 chose to accelerate even further, driving past the troopers and evading their attempts to halt the vehicle. The situation escalated as the driver swerved through traffic, demonstrating reckless behavior that endangered both himself and other motorists on the road.
In an attempt to contain the dangerous situation, troopers coordinated their efforts, radioing to units stationed at Exit 68 in Tolland to aid in stopping the speeding vehicle.
Despite their efforts, the driver skillfully maneuvered his way around traffic and even drove onto the shoulder to evade capture. Considering the escalating danger, state police decided to prioritize public safety and terminated their attempts to stop the vehicle.
The Audi A7 disappeared from the scene, leaving troopers concerned about the potential consequences of the high-speed chase. However, a remarkable turn of events led to the vehicle’s discovery an hour later on the UConn Storrs campus. The driver, identified as Vincent Rappoccio from Southington, was taken into custody without further incident.
The state police’s diligent efforts had paid off, ensuring the safety of both the driver and the public. Rappoccio was subsequently released on a $10,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in Rockville court on September 19.
The incident serves as a reminder of the dangers of reckless driving and the importance of adhering to traffic laws to ensure the safety of everyone on the road.
