A recent incident in Vero Beach has sparked an investigation by the Vero Beach Police Department (VBPD) after a bicyclist was hit by a police vehicle while traveling in a designated bike lane. The collision occurred on State Road A1A, a popular coastal route, prompting concerns and inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the accident. According to VBPD spokesperson Officer Kelsea Callahan, the incident took place on May 30th around 8:30 a.m. at the intersection of S.R. A1A and Camelia Lane, just south of Beachland Boulevard.
The bicyclist, whose direction of travel was not immediately clear, was struck by a police officer who was turning west onto Camelia Lane from S.R. A1A. The injured individual was promptly transported to HCA Florida Lawnwood Hospital in Fort Pierce and was discharged later the same day. However, the aftermath of the collision left questions unanswered as investigators delve into the details of what led to the accident.
Officer Callahan noted that the investigation is ongoing, limiting the amount of information available to the public at this time. The officer involved in the collision, identified as being with the department for less than five years, was reportedly on routine patrol duty when the incident occurred. This marks the first such occurrence for the officer during her tenure with the VBPD.
Eyewitnesses, such as homeowner Jon Ballard, recounted seeing the aftermath of the crash. Ballard, residing along the north side of Camelia Lane and S.R. A1A, described a scene where emergency personnel attended to the injured bicyclist while police vehicles were present. The VBPD officer was reportedly driving a black-and-white Dodge Charger police cruiser at the time of the collision.
