Venson Lamont Barnes Obituary, Death; – A man from Pickens County has been sentenced to life imprisonment for his involvement in a fatal shooting that occurred in 2021, which also resulted in injuries to three other individuals.
On April 2, Circuit Judge Sam Junkin imposed the sentence on 31-year-old Jeremy Lynn Colvin, who was found guilty of the shooting death of 21-year-old Venson Lamont Barnes.
In addition to the life sentence for Barnes’ murder, Colvin received three additional life sentences for the attempted murder of the three other victims. All sentences will be served consecutively, as stated in a news release from the district attorney’s office for the 24th Judicial Circuit, which encompasses Fayette, Lamar, and Pickens counties.
At approximately 2 a.m. on May 30, 2021, law enforcement officers responded to a residence on 7th Street NE in Aliceville, where they discovered Barnes unresponsive in the kitchen and the three other men suffering from gunshot wounds. The three victims identified Colvin as the shooter, according to the release.
A jury convicted Colvin on all counts following a trial in February. The case was prosecuted by District Attorney Andy Hamlin and Chief Assistant District Attorney Jack Nolen, with Judge Junkin presiding. Colvin was represented by the Elizabeth Hunter Law Firm.
During the sentencing hearing, prosecutors presented evidence of Colvin’s prior convictions for three felonies and noted that he faced additional unrelated felony charges while serving his sentence, as mentioned in the release. The court also heard statements from the victims and their families.
“The sentences handed down today ensure that Jeremy Colvin will spend the rest of his life in prison, preventing him from inflicting further harm,” stated Hamlin in a news release. “While no punishment can bring back Venson Barnes or alleviate the pain experienced by the survivors, this sentence guarantees that the defendant is held fully accountable for his senseless and violent actions. I hope it offers some measure of healing to the victims and their families, who have shown incredible strength throughout the investigation and trial.”
