The investigation into Trent Paschal, a teacher at Jefferson Middle School and Dubuque Online School, and a coach within the Dubuque Community School District, has concluded tragically with his death. The sequence of events unfolded as follows:
Police utilized a variety of forensic evidence, traffic cameras, and surveillance footage to substantiate allegations of Third Degree Sexual Abuse against Paschal. Armed with an arrest warrant, law enforcement arrived at Paschal’s residence on Wednesday morning, situated in the 900 block of Washington Street. During their attempt to serve the warrant, officers reported hearing a gunshot from inside the apartment.
Upon entering, authorities discovered Paschal deceased from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. This development followed a report received by the Dubuque Community School District on May 31, detailing allegations of an inappropriate relationship between Paschal and a student. The District promptly initiated an investigation, placing Paschal on administrative leave and collaborating with law enforcement.
The District emphasized its commitment to maintaining a safe learning environment and expressed deep concern over the allegations. Upon learning of Paschal’s death on June 12, 2024, the District pledged full cooperation with the Dubuque Police Department in handling the matter. Their primary focus shifted to supporting students and staff through counseling sessions scheduled to address the emotional impact of these distressing events.
