Investigators in Texas have identified the body of an infant girl pulled out of a lake last month.
A fisherman found the remains of Peyton Sky Davis inside a tool bag in Lake Fort Phantom Hill on Aug. 31.
The infant’s mother and her boyfriend have since been arrested.
The baby’s grandmother says she is mourning the loss of the little girl she never had a chance to hold or see in person.
“It hurts so much. That we can’t hold her, we can’t give her the love that we shared for her,” Tracy Davis, the infant’s grandmother, said.
According to Davis, Peyton’s mother regularly video-called her so she could see Peyton, but those calls stopped suddenly without explanation.
“We didn’t know any information. We didn’t know what was going on until Detective Scott called my son and asked him if Peyton was in his possession. They had the police come down here and search where he was staying at the time,” Davis said.
Days later after her son Anthony Davis’ home was searched, Tracy Davis says the family received the news they feared the most from the Abilene Police Department.
“That’s when he [my son] officially told me. ‘Mom, it’s her. It’s her. They killed my baby girl,’” Tracy Davis said. “It broke my heart. I just started crying.”
And now the grandmother is plagued with the question of why but says Peyton will always have a special place in her heart.
“Peyton, we love you so much. You were our world, and you’re going to be our world no matter what,” Davis said. “One day we’ll be there with you again. And I will get to hold my baby.”
Abilene police said 20-year-old Heather Kennedy, Peyton’s mother, and her boyfriend, 35-year-old Donald Schultz, have been arrested in the case.
They are facing charges of tampering with a human corpse and investigators say more charges may be filed.
