The Lawrence Technological University community and the city of Traverse City, Michigan, are mourning the loss of former baseball player Samuel Dekuiper, who tragically passed away on Friday, May 3rd, 2024, in a car accident. The news of his unexpected death was announced on Saturday through a heartfelt post, which stated, “The Titan family lost a good one yesterday afternoon. Sam DeKuiper was taken from us far too early due to a car crossing the center line and crashing into his car.”
According to Captain Brandon Brinks of the Grand Traverse County Sheriff’s Office, the collision occurred on County Road 633 between Miller Road and Schell Road at approximately 5:00 p.m. on Friday afternoon. One individual was killed in the collision involving two vehicles. The area was shut down for several hours as crews investigated the incident.
Sam Dekuiper, a 2019 graduate of Traverse City West High School, was an outstanding athlete and an exceptional human being. After high school, Sam went on to play baseball at Lawrence Technological University for four years, where he excelled both on and off the field. He worked as a Production Assembler at Thompson Surgical Instruments, Inc. for four months between May and August 2022. Later, he worked as an Engineering Intern at Thompson Retractor for eight months, from May 2023 to December 2023, before being promoted to the position of Design Engineer.
