It is with deep sadness that the Toronto Police Service and the community mourn the loss of Officer Evan Murphy, who passed away after a courageous battle with a rare and aggressive form of cancer. Surrounded by the love of his family, including his devoted wife Heather, Evan passed peacefully, leaving behind a legacy of strength, resilience and kindness that will be forever remembered by those who knew him.
Evan’s battle with cancer was faced with the same determination and grace that defined his life. Despite the aggressive nature of his illness, he refused to let it cloud his spirit. He continued to embrace life, challenging himself and creating precious memories with his loved ones. His determination to live life to the fullest, even in the face of adversity, made him an inspiration to all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Evan will be greatly missed by his wife, Heather Murphy (Lamouri) and their faithful dog, Rory. He is survived by his loving parents, Lillian and Ed Hall, Sean Murphy (Nicole) and Bobby Sivak. his brothers, Josh (Amy), Nate (Kim) and Abby; his grandmother, Greta Murphy; and many extended family members, including in-laws, aunts, uncles and cousins. Evan was predeceased by his grandfather and close friend, Buddy, with whom he shared a special bond.
Those who knew Evan describe him as a kind soul with a kind heart, thoughtful character and an ever-present sense of humor, even in the most difficult of times. His family remembers how, in his final days, he maintained his signature wit, bringing laughter to those around him with his perfectly timed dark humor. Evan’s selflessness was unmatched — he was always thinking of others, seeking to bring comfort and joy to his loved ones, even when facing his own hardships.
Born in St. John’s, Newfoundland, Evan’s life journey has taken him across the country. After earning his undergraduate and graduate degrees in Ottawa, he moved to Toronto to pursue his dream of becoming a police officer. Policing wasn’t just a job for Evan. it was a calling. In his short but impressive career, he earned a reputation as a compassionate and skilled officer, dedicated to helping those in need. When his illness made it impossible for him to continue serving, Evan turned to writing—a creative passion he had cultivated for years. His poetry, short stories, and the beginnings of a novel showcased his incredible talent, and he pursued this craft even while undergoing therapy, completing a creative writing program at the University of Toronto.
Beyond his work and creative pursuits, Evan was a man of many passions. He loved good books, board games, traveling, basketball and heavy music. He maintained a childlike sense of wonder, unabashedly enjoying video games, fantasy novels, and superhero movies. His zest for life and his ability to find joy in the little things were hallmarks of his character.
To honor Evan’s memory and continue his legacy, his family has announced plans to establish the Evan Murphy Memorial Education Fund. This annual award will support individuals who share Evan’s passion for learning and creativity, ensuring that his values and generous spirit continue to make an impact.
A Celebration of Life will be held in Toronto, details to follow. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations to the Evan Murphy Memorial Education Fund, in keeping with Evan’s final wishes to help others in meaningful ways.
Evan’s remarkable life and the love he shared with those around him will never be forgotten. His memory will live on in the hearts of his family, friends and the Toronto police community, who will forever cherish the example he set with his unwavering courage, kindness and love.
