A Lifelong Connection to Muskoka
Born on April 12, 1948, in Bracebridge, Ontario, Tom Stanton lived his entire life in Muskoka, a region he cherished deeply. After graduating from the University of Toronto with a degree in Environmental Studies, Tom pursued a career that reflected his passion for nature. He dedicated over 40 years to the Ministry of Natural Resources, where he played a crucial role in conserving Muskoka’s lakes, forests, and wildlife. His tireless efforts made him a respected figure in the community and a mentor to many aspiring conservationists.
A Devoted Family Man
Tom was a loving husband to his wife, Mary Stanton, with whom he shared over 50 years of marriage. Together, they raised three children—Jennifer, Matthew, and Laura—who were the center of his world. Tom found his greatest joy in spending time with his family, especially at their cherished cottage on Lake Muskoka. There, he passed on his love for the outdoors to his children and grandchildren, teaching them to fish, paddle a canoe, and appreciate the natural world. His gentle wisdom, love of storytelling, and infectious laughter will be fondly remembered by all who knew him.
A Pillar of the Community
Beyond his professional achievements, Tom was a dedicated member of the Muskoka community. He volunteered with local environmental organizations, served on the board of the Muskoka Conservancy, and was an active participant in the Bracebridge Rotary Club. Tom’s contributions to preserving the natural beauty of Muskoka were matched by his commitment to helping others. He was always ready to lend a hand to friends, neighbors, and strangers alike.
A Passion for the Outdoors
In his free time, Tom was an avid outdoorsman with a love for hiking, fishing, and photography. He had a particular talent for capturing Muskoka’s stunning landscapes through his camera lens, and his photographs were frequently featured in local exhibitions and publications. Tom’s deep connection to nature was evident in everything he did, and he inspired those around him to appreciate and protect the environment.
A Legacy of Love and Stewardship
Tom Stanton is survived by his wife, Mary Stanton; his children, Jennifer Armstrong (Paul) of Toronto, Matthew Stanton (Elise) of Barrie, and Laura Mitchell (James) of Huntsville; his grandchildren, Ethan, Grace, Noah, and Sophie; his brother, Robert Stanton of Bracebridge; and many extended family members and close friends.
