Thomas Walsh Obituary, Death – At Northwell Hospital, surrounded by his family and friends, Thomas Walsh Sr. died peacefully on April 1, 2024, after a courageous fight with lung disease. He was profoundly in love with his wife Emily Walsh, whom he had been married to for 43 years. He was a doting grandpa to Nicole and Joseph, a supportive sibling to Miriam and Chipper, and a doting father to Thomas Jr. and Christina.
Thomas, who was born in 1954, spent his childhood on Staten Island’s Westerleigh area, where he would race automobiles and repair them before they were popular. He was born and raised on Staten Island, and after purchasing a property on Greenleaf Ave., only blocks away from his childhood home, he subsequently acquired a second house in the same area.
He raised two children there, and his two grandchildren still visit. He was an expert in everything from plumbing and electricity to painting and undertook extensive improvements on his own, turning both properties into warm and welcoming residences. He was able to repair everything. Whether they were in a car accident or just wanted a second opinion on a secondhand vehicle, friends and relatives always called you first.
But he was more than just the mechanic or the helpful neighbor; people were drawn to him because of his kind spirit, and he would go to extraordinary lengths to support those closest to him. He spent 35 years with the USPS, mostly as a supervisor and auto mechanic. In order to provide his children with the greatest life possible, he would go on a train to Manhattan at 4:30 in the morning every day.
On Friday, April 5, 2024, from 4pm-8pm, friends and family of Thomas are invited to visitation at the Matthew Funeral Home, 2508 Victory Boulevard. On Saturday, April 6, 2024, at 10:00 AM, Blessed Sacrament Church will have a funeral liturgy.
