Steven Winn Obituary, Death; – The Layton City Police Department has confirmed the identity of the crossing guard who was tragically killed on Tuesday morning shortly after assisting students in crossing the street to Vae View Elementary School.
The deceased crossing guard has been identified as Steven Winn, 67, according to Lt. Travis Lyman of the LCPD, as reported by Gephardt Daily. At the time of the incident, several vehicles, including a patrol car, were halted at the intersection of Main Street and 1600 North. Lyman stated that a northbound driver on Main Street failed to stop and collided with Winn, who succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
The driver remained at the location and is cooperating with the authorities. When inquired about whether the driver ran a red light, Lyman explained that due to Winn’s status as a city employee, the Utah Highway Patrol and Clearfield police have been called in to conduct the investigation to prevent any potential conflict of interest. Lyman indicated that the findings from these agencies would clarify the circumstances surrounding the incident.
According to Lyman, Winn was holding a stop sign and wearing a visibility vest when he had just escorted a group of students across the street from east to west and was in the process of returning to the east side when he was struck. It is believed that the children in that group may have witnessed the incident or its immediate aftermath, Lyman noted.
“We have communicated with the school staff, and they are providing resources today to assist those students in processing and navigating what they observed,” Lyman stated, adding that he was uncertain about the number of students who witnessed the tragic event.
A statement from the principal of Vae View Elementary, which was shared with Gephardt Daily by the Davis School District, informed parents that counseling services are being made available and encouraged parents and guardians of all students to take the opportunity to discuss their beliefs and explore ways their children can cope with this tragedy.
