Steven Hughes Death Notice, – On the 19th of January, 2023, Steven Don Hughes, who resided in Inverness and was 75 years old at the time of his passing, passed away peacefully in the comfort of his own home. Don Hughes was born on November 11, 1947, in Knoxville, Tennessee, to Frank Hughes and Wilda (Payne) Hughes, both of whom have since passed away as individuals. 1953 was the year when the Hughes family made the move to Inverness. He followed the teachings of the Presbyterian church.
The Bronze Star Medal and the Army Commendation Medal were among the many medals and decorations that Don received for his service in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. He also received a number of other medals and decorations. Don became familiar with a significant number of people in the neighborhood over the course of approximately 19 years, during which time he was the proprietor and operator of the Standard Oil/Chevron gas station located on Main Street. He never missed an opportunity to offer advice or direction to anyone who needed it, and he was very accessible. The town was familiar with Don, who was a prominent person in the community.
Not only did Don take great delight in watching football with his sons, but he also looked forward to going to Gator games so that he could be with his son Chris. There were multiple occasions when Don and his son Greg triumphed in fishing competitions that were held in their separate villages. Don was an avid angler, and he and Greg won the events both times. Don’s five sisters who had preceded him in death were Jonnie Grumbling, Joanne Chamblin, Jeanne Davis, Janice Holinghead, and Joyace Swanson. All of them had passed away before Don. In addition, Don’s mother passed away before an earlier time.
Those who are left to cherish his memory are his wife of 53 years and best friend, JoAnne Hughes; his sons Christopher (who is engaged to Lindsey Thomas) and Greg (who is married to Katie and has granddaughters Madeline, Hannah, and Charlotte); his sister, Joette Bowsky; and a large number of nieces and nephews, all of whom live in Inverness. Families and friends are warmly invited to join a gathering that will take place at Chas. E. Davis Funeral Home on Thursday, January 26, 2023, commencing at eleven in the morning and continuing until twelve thirty in the afternoon. Immediately following the conclusion of the visitation, Don will be laid to rest at the Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell with full honors. As per the prearranged plan, the procession is expected to depart from the funeral home at 12:30 p.m.
