Death Notice – Born on November 3, 1948, in Charlotte, NC, Steve Douglas Hansel’s life journey was marked by dedication, excellence, and unwavering service. His passing on August 23 leaves a void in the hearts of those who knew him.
Steve is survived by his loving wife, Jane Gurley Hansel, his sister Dale Ann Hansel Caldwell, nieces, nephews, grandnephews, great-grandnephews, and his children and grandchildren. Predeceased by his parents, brothers, an infant brother, and his first wife, Jane Reisig Hansel, Steve’s legacy is one of familial love and commitment.
From childhood, Steve was an active member of First Baptist Church, Mount Holly, NC, playing roles in Sunday School, youth music, and summer baseball programs. Excelling in academics and sports at Mount Holly High School, he became a prominent figure, leading the student body as President.
Steve’s academic journey continued at UNC-Chapel Hill and Appalachian State University, where he excelled in football, basketball, and baseball. His postgraduate education at UNC-Greensboro culminated in a Master’s Degree in School Administration.
A distinguished career in education followed, spanning teaching, coaching, and administrative roles for over three decades. Steve’s contributions were not limited to the classroom; he actively participated in numerous educational organizations, reflecting his commitment to excellence.
Beyond his professional life, Steve embodied the heart of a servant. His volunteer work extended to various organizations, including Montreat Presbyterian Church, Piney Grove Historic Cemetery Inc, Manna Food Bank Backpacks for Kids, and Swannanoa Fire & Rescue, among others.
In 1981, Steve married Jane Reisig, and their love story was filled with travels, volunteering in South Africa, and active participation in church communities. After her passing in 2018, Steve reconnected with lifelong friend Jane Thompson Gurley, and they were married in 2020, bringing joy and companionship into each other’s lives.
Steve’s passing is not just a loss for his family but also for the wider community. His dedication to service, love for family, and contributions to education have left an enduring legacy. As friends, family, and the community come together to celebrate Steve’s life, let us remember him as a good and faithful servant whose impact will be felt for generations to come.
A memorial service will be held on Monday, August 28, at Providence Baptist Church in Hendersonville, NC, and a graveside service on Tuesday, August 29, at Piney Grove Historic Cemetery in Swannanoa, NC. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to various organizations close to Steve’s heart.
