CHARLOTTE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — John Holmes III, a staunch Charlotte cycling advocate, died this week.
His obituary states that Holmes died unexpectedly Dec. 29 at his home. He was 29.
His obituary states that Holmes “was all about community and making it better for all.” He was a huge advocate for pedestrian and cyclist-friendly infrastructure in the city. He worked for Civility Localized as a public engagement officer was pursuing his Master’s of Public Administration at UNC Charlotte.
His passion for cyclist-friendly streets even cost him his job when a drive-thru business was proposed in an area where the zoning did not allow them.
The obituary says Holmes “looked forward every day to how he could continue to improve the city he loved.”
He is survived by his wife, Nashaly Ruiz-Gonzalez; daughter, Theo; mother, Lola; and his sister, Shira (husband Cody) Allen. He was preceded in death by his father, John.
Holmes grew up in Pickens County, South Carolina, and served in the U.S. Marine Corps after graduating high school.
A tribute ride was held Friday at First Ward Park, and a celebration of life will be held Lowe-Neddo Funeral Home in Matthews.
Memorials may be sent to the family via GoFundMe.
