Actress Linda Lee Sylvander, better known by her stage name, Linda Haynes, passed away on July 17 at the age of 75 in Summerville, South Carolina, and news of her passing has only lately reached the general public. Her family has not revealed what caused her death, although they have indicated it was calm. She entered the entertainment industry in 1969 and stayed there until the early 1980s after being born on November 4, 1947, in Miami, Florida. Haynes, a lifetime member of The Actor’s Studio, had her acting debut in the Japanese science fiction monster film Latitude Zero (1969), in which she played Dr. Anne Barton.
In subsequent films like Coffy (1973) and The Nickel Ride (1974), she became a familiar face. That led to her breakthrough performance as a weary bartender in the vengeance film Rolling Thunder (1977). She next starred in Human Experiments (1979), a film about women in jail, before moving on to Brubaker (1980), another film set in a similar setting. Her final film appearance was in the 1980 TV drama Guyana Tragedy: The Story of Jim Jones, which marked the end of her acting career.
She veered to the left after that, accepting a position as a legal secretary at a business in Florida. Haynes’s work in Rolling Thunder was lauded by none other than filmmaker Quentin Tarantino. “Linda Haynes as Linda Forchet is THE performance for me! She appeared in one of the QT fest sleepers, The Nickel Ride, and in Pam Grier’s COFFY, in which she plays the role of the girl who reaches into Grier’s afro as the latter is shaving and exclaims, “Aaaaahhhh.” However, Linda Forchet is the Paul Schrader female protagonist I enjoy watching the most. She possesses Ava Gardner’s blousey style, but whereas Ava needed years to achieve it, Linda Haynes seems to have done it effortlessly. And I mean that as a complement.
James Riley Sylvander and Amelia Grace Sylvander, as well as her son Gregory Leif Sylvander and daughter-in-law Courtney Lynn Sylvander, are among her surviving loved ones. Her pets, including the cats Bingo and Bluey and the dogs Rex, Biggie, and Raya, will miss her greatly.
