Staff Sgt Shelbe Butner,Spc Jacob Mullen Obituary, Death; – A tragic accident occurred on Thursday night at Fort Stewart, resulting in the identification of two soldiers who lost their lives. Staff Sgt. Shelbe Butner and Spc. Jacob Mullen, both serving as motor transport operators, died in a single-vehicle incident during a field training exercise.
Fort Stewart officials issued a statement expressing their sorrow: “We are heartbroken about this tragic accident and will do everything we can to support the Soldiers’ Families and friends during this incredibly difficult time,” stated Maj. Gen. Christopher Norrie, commanding general of the 3rd Infantry Division. “The entire division extends our deepest condolences to the Families of the Soldiers who died in this accident.”
Both soldiers were assigned to the 6th Squadron, 8th Cavalry Regiment, part of the 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division. According to the base’s release, Butner, 28, originally from Missouri, had served in the Army for nine years. Her commendations include the Meritorious Service Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, the Air Assault Badge, and the Drill Sergeant Badge.
Mullen, 25, hailing from Maryland, had served for seven years and had previously been deployed to Poland. His accolades include the Army Achievement Medal, the Army Good Conduct Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, and the Army Service Ribbon.
“Our hearts are broken at this devastating loss,” remarked Maj. Gen. Christopher Norrie, the Commanding General of the 3rd Infantry Division. “Shelbe and Jacob were honored and highly respected Soldiers of the Marne Division, and our thoughts and prayers are with their families and fellow Soldiers during this incredibly difficult time.”
Butner and Mullen were engaged in a combat training exercise near Camp Oliver when their Joint Light Tactical Vehicle, operating under blackout conditions, veered off the road and into standing water. Soldiers from their unit promptly responded to the scene, providing first aid and performing CPR until emergency services arrived.
