(PINPOINT WEATHER) — We have issued a Pinpoint Weather Alert Day for Wednesday due to the threat of winter weather across the region.

The system will move into the region late Wednesday morning into Wednesday afternoon, before exiting Wednesday night.
This will be a wintry mix of sleet and freezing rain for the Charlotte metro, with higher chances of snow towards the I-40 corridor. However, it could start as brief snow for Charlotte before quickly transitioning over to sleet and freezing rain.

While the winter weather impact has trended lower for the Charlotte metro regarding snow and ice totals, which could still lead to some isolated slick travel on Wednesday. Accumulations of snow do look high enough for more significant travel impacts further north along I-40.
Looking at potential snow totals, South Carolina counties will likely see no snow at all, with less than an inch of snow in the forecast for the Charlotte metro.
Snow totals do increase as you get closer to the I-40 corridor. Spots like Statesville, Hickory, Lenoir, and Morganton will see between 1-2″ of snowfall. The mountains are looking at 2-3″ of snowfall; however, isolated higher amounts are possible.

The Charlotte metro could also see up to a tenth of an inch of ice, which could cause some slick travel throughout the day on Wednesday. Ice totals will be lower and essentially nonexistent for most of the I-40 corridor and areas north. However, snow totals will be higher in those locations. South Carolina counties will see lower ice totals, possibly a glaze of ice.
This system will move out Wednesday night, leading to drier conditions into Thursday. However, slick travel will remain a possibility through early Thursday. Stay safe and be prepared!
