CHARLOTTE (PINPOINT WEATHER) — Due to wintry weather and treacherous travel concerns, our Pinpoint Weather Team has issued Pinpoint Weather Alert Days for Friday and Saturday.
Confidence is increasing that we will indeed see wintry weather across the Carolinas starting Friday afternoon and continuing into early Saturday. This includes the Charlotte metro region as well, which has not seen measurable snowfall in almost three years.
The snow drought will end later this week for Charlotte; however, it will not be just snow the Queen City will experience. It is becoming increasingly likely that freezing rain and sleet will be mixing into the forecast Friday night into Saturday morning.
Earlier this week, models were very split on the track of our winter storm low-pressure center.
A more inland and/or along-the-coast track will lead to more of a wintry mix Friday night. This is the most likely track.
The unlikely track is for the area of low pressure to travel out to sea, which would have given more snow to the area.
It is too early to discuss the numbers in regard to how much snow and ice the Carolinas will see. However, it will be enough to cause hazardous travel as early as the Friday evening commute home.

Even though the wintry weather will stop by Saturday morning, the roads will likely be slick for most of the day on Saturday as road crews try to keep up with conditions.
More updates will come on potential amounts of snow and ice as the week goes on.
