Police confirmed that shots were fired near the Long Beach LIRR train station, prompting significant disruptions and safety measures in the area. The incident occurred following the dispersal of a large crowd at Long Beach, which necessitated police intervention and the closure of local businesses on Thursday evening.
Due to the escalating situation, the Long Beach Police Department sought assistance from Nassau County police around 6 p.m. to manage the crowd effectively. Despite efforts to clear the beach, many young people gathered on the boardwalk, leading to reports of at least one altercation. Similar incidents have marred previous gatherings in Long Beach during peak times. The chaotic conditions forced Riptides, a local business, to close temporarily. Law enforcement has not confirmed any arrests or injuries resulting from the disturbance.
In response to ongoing police investigations, the MTA announced partial suspension of the Long Beach branch of the LIRR between Long Beach and Island Park. Train services have been redirected to operate exclusively to and from Island Park. To accommodate affected passengers, the N15 NICE bus service is honoring LIRR tickets for travel between Long Beach and Island Park. Commuters are advised to transfer to westbound Babylon branch trains at Rockville Centre for continued travel.
