Shirley Rigsby Powers Obituary, Death – On March 11, 2024, Shirley Rigsby Powers, a cherished member of the Carrollton community, departed this world, leaving a legacy of warmth, generosity, and familial dedication. She was fondly remembered by all who knew and loved her. Shirley Rigsby was born in Heard County, Georgia on August 11, 1936. Her path was distinguished by love, humour, and an unyielding commitment to her family. Her parents, John Millard Rigsby and Ora Lee Jackson Rigsby, were her parents.
Shirley’s life was entwined with that of Frank Michael Powers, her soulmate and partner in everything, from when she was a little child. In their teenage years, they began their love affair, which eventually developed into a marriage for decades. Following their marriage in Carrollton, they embarked on a journey together, travelling worldwide while Frank faithfully served in the Air Force. Despite this, they decided to establish their existence in Carrollton, where they brought up their three sons within the warmth of a tight-knit community enriched by family links.
Shirley’s maternal nature was exemplified by the care she provided for her family. Shirley was the epitome of a homemaker. Whether caring for the abundant crop that her garden produced or making mouthwatering sweets such as her well-known yeast rolls and pound cake, Shirley’s extraordinary culinary skills were only topped by her limitless devotion to her family and friends. Her residence transformed into a haven of affection and merriment, where her family and friends could congregate to bask in her company.
Shirley’s most treasured recollections were the days she spent basking in the sun’s warmth by the pool in the backyard, where the sound of her grandchildren’s laughter reverberated in perfect harmony with the sound of the water splashing. Her heart filled with pride as she saw them grow, and she provided steadfast support at every stage, from when they were performing in school to competing in sports. Shirley’s excitement when her loved ones surrounded her was unrivalled by anything else.
Shirley’s faith served as a guiding light, providing her with consolation and strength throughout her life. She was a faithful member of Rocky Mount Baptist Church with tremendous devotion. Even though her health was deteriorating, her unyielding faith remained unshakeable, serving as a guiding light of optimism for everyone who knew her. During her older years, Shirley discovered comfort and camaraderie at Brookdale, where she made new acquaintances and revived friendships she had previously had.
Her unconquerable spirit shone brilliantly, bringing happiness and laughter into the lives of all who were fortunate enough to be in her presence. When Shirley moved into Carrollton Manor in 2023, she welcomed each day with a sense of grace and resiliency, leaving an unforgettable imprint on everyone who had the opportunity to come into contact with her. The loss of Shirley has left a hole in the hearts of many people; however, her legacy will continue to be carried on by her sons Mike and Janice Powers, Tim and Jill Powers, and Chris Powers; her sister Martha Blackmon; her brother and sister-in-law Jack and Cynthia Rigsby; her grandchildren Carrie and Austin Hylton, Kate and Josh Lucas, Jimmy and Jen Beck, Scott Powers, and Hunter Powers; and her great-grandchildren Chandler Menz, Grayson Menz, Cassidy Hylton, Sydney Lucas, Coltyn Hylton, and Max Lucas among others.
I hope that the enduring legacy of love and generosity that Shirley leaves behind will provide us with some measure of solace as we come together to recognize and celebrate her extraordinary life. We pray that her spirit will continue to motivate us to treasure the times we spend with those we care about and to greet each day with gratitude and kindness.
