Shiree Barney Death, Obituary – In a heart-wrenching incident in Aripine, Navajo County, a nine-year-old girl tragically lost her life after being mauled by her family’s Cane Corso dogs. The attack occurred on Friday, August 9, around 6:30 p.m. at a residence where the girl was reportedly trying to turn off a water spigot. According to the Navajo County Sheriff’s Office, the girl was at home with several family members when the dogs, which were familiar to both the family and the children, suddenly attacked her.
The circumstances leading to the dogs’ aggressive behavior remain unclear. Despite immediate medical efforts from her family, the young girl succumbed to her injuries. The Navajo County Sheriff’s Office-Criminal Investigation Unit, along with Navajo County Animal Control, is handling the investigation. The department has refrained from releasing additional details due to the ongoing nature of the inquiry.
However, the sheriff’s office has confirmed that the dogs involved in the attack have been seized and will undergo a thorough examination. It is likely that they will not be returned to the family. Chief Deputy Brian Swanty of the Navajo County Sheriff’s Office expressed deep sympathy for the affected family, noting the emotional toll such cases take on all involved.
“Our hearts just pour out for this family, not only here in the headquarters at the Navajo County Sheriff’s Office, but the guys who work on the street that responded to this. This is not the type of call that anybody ever wants to be involved in,” Swanty remarked. Aripine, a small community approximately three hours northeast of Phoenix, is now grappling with the aftermath of this devastating event. The loss of a young life in such a manner has left many in the community in shock and mourning.
As the investigation continues, authorities are working to determine the factors that led to the tragic incident and ensure that such occurrences are prevented in the future.
