Sherrell Joseph Calhoun Obituary, Death – At the time of his passing on Thursday, March 28, 2024, Sherrell Joseph Calhoun, who was 88 years old and lived in Madisonville, Kentucky, died away at his home with his family by his side. Everett Calhoun and Pauline Payne Calhoun, who have since passed away, were his parents when he was born on December 23, 1935 in Daviess County, Kentucky. Both of his brothers, James Henry Calhoun and Julian Calhoun, as well as his sisters, Juanita Riney, Lucy Strehl, and Martha Warren, passed away before him. His twin brother, Reverend Gerald “Jerry” Calhoun, was also among those who passed away before him.
Sherrell was a veteran of the United States Navy when he established Calhoun Feed Service in 1964. Sherrell has been recognized as the Farmer of the Year in Hopkins County, as well as a Friend of Agriculture and a member of the Kentucky Cattleman’s Hall of Fame. In his later years, Sherrell’s favorite thing to do was to spend the winter months in Florida with his family and friends. In addition to being a member of Christ the King Catholic Church, he was also a Knight of the Fourth Degree in the Knights of Columbus, an organization that he was personally responsible for establishing at Christ the King. A former president of the Christ the King Parish Council and School Board, he served in that capacity. Additionally, he was a member of the Hopkins County Fair Board for more than half a century.
His wife of 65 years, Elizabeth Jean “Jeannie” Calhoun, his daughter Cheryl (Alan) Lutz of Madisonville, his sons Jerry (Kathy) Calhoun of Leesburg, Virginia, John (Janice) Calhoun of Hanson, Kentucky, David Calhoun of Odenton, Maryland, and Michael (Katie) Calhoun of Madisonville, and his grandchildren Linday Davis and Cara Calhoun, Elizabeth, George, Richard, and Tim Calhoun, Jacob and Sarah Lutz, and Nick and Hope Calhoun are among those who can carry on his legacy.
