Sheila Berroa Obituary, Death; – A woman with connections to Ottawa is among the casualties of a roof collapse at a renowned nightclub in the Dominican Republic.
CTV News Ottawa has confirmed that one of the victims is Sheila Berroa, who had resided in Ottawa but was in the Dominican Republic at the time of the incident.
Berroa served as the general manager at the Planet Fitness on Merivale Road and was also a student at Algonquin College. An Instagram post from last August highlighted her 24th birthday celebration.
On Monday, Berroa shared another photo on Instagram, prompting heartfelt messages from friends. One post read, “You are and will always be the loving friend from my childhood.” Another expressed, “May God have you in a beautiful place, princess.”
Berroa’s family departed Ottawa on Wednesday morning to return to the Dominican Republic. The tragic incident resulted in at least 124 fatalities and over 255 injuries after the ceiling collapsed during a concert at the Jet Set club in Santo Domingo on Tuesday morning. The National Institute of Forensic Pathology announced the identification of 54 victims on Wednesday.
The Professional Baseball League of the Dominican Republic reported on X that former MLB pitcher Octavio Dotel was also a victim of the collapse.
In response to the tragedy, President Luis Abinader has declared three official days of mourning for those who lost their lives. He expressed his condolences on X, stating, “We deeply regret the tragedy that occurred at the Jet Set nightclub. All relief agencies are providing necessary assistance and are working diligently in the rescue efforts. Our thoughts and prayers are with the affected families.”
