Who was Shaun Martin?
American multi-instrumentalist, producer, arranger, and composer Shaun Martin passed away in 2004. Martin served as Kirk Franklin’s music director while serving as the music minister of Friendship-West Baptist Church in Dallas. He plays with the jazz fusion ensemble Snarky Puppy as well. As a member of Snarky Puppy, Martin won three Grammys; for his collaborations with Franklin, he was awarded four.
Dallas, Texas is the place of his birth. Martin’s mother took him to piano lessons when he was four years old, where he studied jazz and classical pieces. His church provided him with gospel music as well. After graduating from Dallas’ Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts, he attended Weatherford College and the University of North Texas.
Martin began working with the Gospel choir’s conductor, Kirk Franklin, when he was still a high school student. He received a Bachelor of Applied Arts and Sciences from North Texas. While still a student at North Texas, he contributed to the recording and production of Erykah Badu’s critically acclaimed album Mama’s Gun.
