Seymour Gibbs Obituary, Second man’s death in the Etobicoke shooting to be considered as homicide; Toronto police are investigating the death of a second man following a mass shooting in Etobicoke as a homicide.
Late Sunday night, five men were shot in the parking lot of North Albion Collegiate Institute, near the corner of Mount Olive Drive and Kipling Avenue. All five victims were transported to hospital, where two have since died. Those who were injured sustained either life-altering or non-life-threatening injuries, according to police.
The first man who died was identified as Delroy “George” Parkes, 61, who was pronounced dead on Sunday.
The second man who died has been identified by a family member as Seymour Gibbs, 46. His death was confirmed on Wednesday, and Toronto Police Chief Myron Demkiw provided an update during a community walk on Thursday.
“It is actually going to be called a homicide based on the results we received today from the coroner,” Demkiw said.
Earlier, police had indicated that an autopsy would be performed on the second man to determine the cause of death.
According to police, the shooting occurred when a group of men were gathered in the parking lot after a soccer game. A dark pickup truck pulled into the lot, and two individuals exited the vehicle and opened fire on the men before fleeing in the truck. Police believe there was no prior acquaintance between the suspects and victims.
Regarding the search for suspects, Chief Demkiw stated that the investigation is ongoing and described it as “very, very active.”
“It’s a very, very active investigation and I’m not going to get into the details,” Demkiw told reporters.
The community and authorities are continuing to seek answers and support for the victims and their families in the aftermath of this tragic incident.
