Sergio Francisco Alvarez Obituary – Sergio Francisco Alvarez, aged 48, was identified as the individual who succumbed to his injuries at a medical facility following an altercation with an officer during a traffic stop in south Phoenix. The incident occurred at approximately 3 a.m. near 10th Street and Southern Avenue. Alvarez, who was stopped for a traffic violation while riding his bicycle, engaged in a physical altercation with two officers before brandishing a firearm.
He proceeded to shoot one officer in the leg before being shot by the other. The injured officer was admitted to the ICU and is awaiting surgery, as confirmed by Chief Michael Sullivan. The officer, who has been in service for two years, remains unnamed. Excluding Alvarez, a total of 21 individuals have been shot by law enforcement officers in Maricopa County this year, as reported by the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office.
This marks the third incident of a Phoenix police officer being shot this year, according to Sullivan. On March 29, Officer Harold Boswell was off duty when he was shot in south Phoenix while responding to a suspected robbery, resulting in the arrest of three teenagers. Another officer was shot in the leg by fugitive suspect Junior Reyes, aged 30, who was subsequently shot and killed by police in Peoria. None of the reported incidents involving shootings against police officers have been fatal.
