Popular American video game developer, writer, and producer, Scott Braden Cawthon has tragically passed away. Cawthon was best known for creating Five Nights at Freddy’s a series of survival horror video games that expanded into a media franchise. He died on Wednesday.
Cawthon began his career making family-friendly Christian video games, with limited success. He moved into horror with the first Five Nights at Freddy’s game in 2014, which was a commercial hit and created a cult following.
Cawthon has created seven games in the core series and four spin-offs as of 2023. In addition to the games, Cawthon penned multiple storylines for the franchise, including books and the screenplay for the Five Nights at Freddy’s film (2023), which he also produced

Cawthon, a devoted Christian, began his career in game production by creating self-funded Christian adventure games. Cawthon’s first professional game was named Iffermoon.
He attended the Art Institute of Houston in 1996, where he learned how to make computer graphics, but he taught himself how to design games with the Clickteam Fusion engine. As a member of Hope Animation, a Christian artist collective, Cawthon also created animated Christian films.
Pilgrim’s Progress (2012) and The Desolate Hope (2012) are two of Cawthon’s most prominent religious efforts. Pilgrim’s Progress is a JRPG-style game based on a theological allegory, including enemies such as Beelzebub, Apollyon, Shame, and Giant Despair.
