Sametria Edwards-McCord Obituary, A nurse was shot and died shortly after beginning her work at Grady Hospital; The family of a woman killed after attending a gathering that followed a funeral has identified her as Sametria Edwards-McCord, a nurse at Grady Hospital. Tragically, it was at Grady Hospital where doctors tried to save her life after she was shot.
Sametria, 29, died at the hospital. Her sister, Travonya Edwards, was with her just before the shooting.
“I was just with her. I was just talking to her. Just standing there with her,” Travonya told Channel 2’s Tom Jones. “I could have been with her.”
Both sisters had attended a repast service for a relative on Chestnut Hill Circle in DeKalb County in May. As Travonya left her sister’s side, gunfire erupted, and Sametria was hit.
Travonya rushed to her sister’s aid. “It was scary. Because it was just scary seeing her like that,” she said.
Sametria was quickly taken to Grady Hospital, the same hospital where she had started working as a nurse just four days earlier. Their mother, Latanya Walker, rushed to the hospital and saw her daughter arrive. “I’m seeing her. I’m seeing that she’s not alert,” she recalled.
Despite the medical team’s efforts, Sametria later died at Grady.
Witnesses reported that the shots were fired from several houses away, and Sametria’s family believes the bullet wasn’t meant for her.
Jones asked the family who would fire at or near a grieving gathering. “Animals. Monsters. That’s what I say,” Sametria’s mother insisted.
Sametria’s family is still seeking justice. The shooter or shooters remain at large, and they are asking the public for help in finding them.
