Sam Nordquist Obituary, Death; – Authorities in New York have provided updated information regarding their investigation into the death of a 24-year-old transgender man from Oakdale, Minnesota, indicating that they do not currently classify the incident as a hate crime.
Five individuals have been charged with second-degree murder in connection with the death of Sam Nordquist. His body was discovered in a field, and investigators report that he endured weeks of torture and mistreatment.
“We encourage the community to refrain from speculating about the motive behind this murder as we strive to achieve justice for Sam,” stated a joint announcement from the Ontario County District Attorney and the New York State Police. “At this moment, there is no evidence to suggest that Sam’s murder was motivated by hate.”
Under New York law, for an act to be classified as a hate crime, prosecutors must demonstrate that the offense was committed “in whole or in substantial part” due to a person’s gender identity or expression, among other characteristics such as race, religion, or sexual orientation.
The statement further notes that the alleged perpetrators also identify as LGBTQ+, and Nordquist had previously lived with one of them.
“We share the community’s outrage at this atrocious act of violence and recognize the anxiety it has caused within the LGBTQ+ community,” the statement continued. “We are committed to pursuing every lead to uncover the motive behind this murder.” In an interview with KARE-11, Nordquist’s mother, Linda, recounted that the last time she heard her son’s voice was on New Year’s Day.
“He had a heart of gold and would never harm anyone,” she expressed. “This is incredibly devastating. Sam did not deserve this. No one should have to endure such torment.” Nordquist had traveled to New York on September 28 to meet an online girlfriend, with plans to return to Minnesota two weeks later. His mother has vowed to seek justice for her son.
“The individuals responsible for this act against Sam are pure evil,” she stated. “They lack humanity. We will ensure that you receive justice, Sam, even if it takes every last breath I have.”
A vigil for Nordquist is planned.
