A tragic incident unfolded on Monday night outside a ShopRite grocery store in Newark, New Jersey, when a 56-year-old man was fatally stabbed following an argument.
Rodney Mayes, from East Orange passed away after an altercation with another man in the store’s parking lot on Springfield Avenue.
The incident occurred around 7 p.m., when Mayes and the suspect engaged in a verbal dispute that quickly escalated. Authorities reported that the suspect then pulled out a knife and fatally stabbed Mayes.
Witnesses who were present at the scene described the suspect fleeing the area in a dark-colored vehicle, but police have not released further details about the individual or the car involved.
Following the stabbing, Mayes was rushed to the nearby University Hospital, where he was sadly pronounced dead.
The investigation into his death is being led by the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office, as authorities work to piece together more information surrounding the events that led to the fatal confrontation.
The ShopRite in question, which opened in 2015, has been a vital part of the Newark community. It was celebrated for bringing access to fresh, affordable food to an area that lacked grocery stores at the time.
Neil Greenstein, the original owner, expressed pride in the impact the store had, saying that opening the Newark location allowed his family business to both expand and positively contribute to the community’s food access.
The store was part of a larger effort to revitalize the area, providing a convenient and essential service to local residents.
However, in late 2024, Greenstein sold the store to Glass Gardens Inc., a family-run local business. Despite the change in ownership, the ShopRite’s role in the Newark community remains significant.
In light of the stabbing incident, residents and visitors alike are left shaken by the violence outside a place that many relied on for their daily needs.
As the investigation continues, the authorities are urging anyone with information about the incident or the suspect’s identity to come forward. Meanwhile, the community remains deeply affected by the loss of a local man, and the incident serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing challenges related to safety in urban areas.
