Robert S Rose Obituary, Death;- Dorchester County Coroner Paul Brouthers has disclosed the identity of a man who was shot and killed by police following a standoff in unincorporated Dorchester County on Friday.
The individual, identified as 35-year-old Robert S. Rose from North Charleston, was the barricaded suspect reportedly armed with a hatchet, who died during an officer-involved shooting at the Waverly Place apartment complex late Friday afternoon.
According to Brouthers, Rose was transported by emergency medical services to Trident Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 4:24 p.m. An autopsy is scheduled to take place at the Medical University of South Carolina at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, March 3.
On the morning of Friday, February 28, at approximately 9:30 a.m., deputies from the Dorchester County Sheriff’s Office responded to a request for an escort from the Department of Mental Health concerning a commitment order, as stated by Sheriff Sam Richardson. A confrontation ensued when deputies attempted to apprehend Rose, during which he allegedly assaulted a deputy with a hatchet. The injured deputy received treatment for non-life-threatening injuries at a local hospital and was released later that day.
Following the incident, Rose reportedly barricaded himself inside a residence, leading to a standoff. The North Charleston Police Department’s SWAT team was called in for assistance. NCPD Chief Roland Camacho indicated that just before 4 p.m., the situation “escalated” when Rose emerged from the residence through a window, brandishing two hatchets.
“Despite clear and repeated commands from our officers to drop the weapons, the subject did not comply,” Chief Camacho stated. “Consequently, our officers discharged their weapons to mitigate the threat to the surrounding public.”
Both Sheriff Richardson and Chief Camacho confirmed that the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division is conducting an investigation into the shooting, in conjunction with the Dorchester County Coroner’s Office.
