Officers were able to identify and arrest a suspect in connection with a fatal attack that took place in the parking lot of a Florida golf course thanks to the publicity surrounding the suspect’s hole-in-one and subsequent photo op. According to court documents, Robert Moore, 75, of the Villages was arrested by the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office on July 27 and charged with aggravated manslaughter on an elderly person in connection with the June 28 incident at the Glenview Country Club.
The 87-year-old Dean Zook allegedly crashed into another parked automobile while on his way to the club that day with his wife for supper. After Zook allegedly claimed responsibility and asked for insurance information, a man walked out and questioned what happened to his car. According to the complaint, the second man repeatedly hit Zook. The victim “attempted to put his hands up to protect himself but was unable to do so in the face of the continuing punches,” according to the court documents.
According to court documents, the suspect fled the scene after realizing that his vehicle was not the one hit by Zook. Police said Zook staggered when they arrived, and he was taken to the hospital with cerebral bleeding. On July 16th, his injuries proved fatal, as evidenced by his death certificate. Police said they were able to identify the culprit after interviewing numerous witnesses, combing through credit card information, and reviewing surveillance footage. According to court filings, detectives were able to link Moore to credit card purchases made at the club on the day of the assault.
According to court records, police received an anonymous tip claiming the suspect’s name was “Bob” and a photo from the same night at another club in which Moore wore the identical attire as those seen in the CCTV footage. Using Google Image Search, detectives claim to have located a photo of Moore from a November 8 item on Villages-News.com, in which he poses with his ace at Tarpon Boil Executive Golf Course. According to the complaint, Moore was dressed identically to the culprit in the video security evidence and eyewitness accounts of the alleged assault.
According to the court records, investigators went to Moore’s house on July 26 to place him under arrest for the manslaughter. According to the court complaint, Moore informed investigators that Zook grabbed his hands as he backed out of the parking lot. Moore, who stands at 6 feet 2 inches and weighs around 210 pounds, claimed in court filings that he was protecting himself from the victim, who stood at 5 feet 8 inches and weighed around 160 pounds. Moore’s legal counsel details were not immediately accessible. On July 27, according to court records, he was granted release on a $30,000 bond.
