A routine trip home turned tragic for the Robert Lee ISD girls’ basketball team when their school bus was sideswiped by a trailer on Saturday night. The accident, which occurred as the team was returning from the Borden County Tournament, left one student critically injured and several others with minor bruises and scrapes.
The collision happened on a rural highway near the outskirts of the town, according to initial reports. Authorities say the trailer, attached to a truck, swerved into the bus’s lane, striking the side of the vehicle. The force of the impact caused significant damage to the side of the bus and left the young athletes and their coaches shaken.
Emergency responders arrived promptly at the scene and transported the critically injured student to a hospital in Lubbock, where she is currently receiving treatment. School officials have confirmed that her condition is serious but stable. Several other students sustained minor injuries, mostly bruises, and were treated at the scene before being reunited with their families.
