Rickey Melvin Obituary, Death; – A pedestrian was tragically struck and killed by a commuter bus in Middletown early on Monday morning, as reported by city police. According to the Middletown police, the incident occurred at the intersection of Wickham and Fairlawn avenues shortly before 6 a.m. on Monday.
Responding officers, who were alerted by a 911 call, arrived at the scene to find the pedestrian, later identified as 67-year-old Rickey Melvin of Middletown, lying in the eastbound lane of Wickham Avenue. A Coach USA commuter bus was positioned beside him in the westbound lane. The bus was occupied solely by the driver, who remained at the scene and cooperated fully with the police.
Melvin was transported to Garnet Health Medical Center by Empress Ambulance, where he was pronounced deceased.
The detective division of the Middletown Police Department is conducting an investigation into the collision, with assistance from state police, including their Collision Reconstruction Unit and Commercial Enforcement Unit.
The bus was equipped with a functioning onboard dash camera that recorded the incident. At this stage, police have indicated that no charges are pending against the bus driver; however, the bus was towed from the scene for a comprehensive inspection.
Authorities noted that Melvin was homeless and had been residing at various locations in the vicinity over the past few weeks. Additionally, he was physically disabled, which significantly limited his walking speed.
Police indicated that Melvin’s dark-colored clothing may have been a major factor contributing to the collision. The investigation remains ongoing, and anyone who may have witnessed the incident is urged to contact Middletown detectives at 845-343-3152.
