Ray Plyler Obituary, Death – We regret to inform you that Mr. Ray Von Plyler has retired and will no longer be working for us. On Thursday, August 24, 2023, at Atrium Health-Main, Mr. Ray Von Plyler, 78, of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, passed away.
He was the son of the late Alexander “Toy” Plyler and Wilma Broom Plyler and was born on June 18, 1945 in Lancaster. Mr. Plyler attended Antioch Baptist Church regularly. He starred as a wide receiver for the Clemson Tigers and on the gridiron for the Lancaster Blue Hurricanes. Mr. Plyler served in Vietnam and afterwards as a Military Policeman in Germany for the United States Army. He left the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Department and retired. Mr. Plyler’s passions in life were his farm and his animals. He was a beloved figure in the community and loved by many.
The Reverend Dr. Trent McLaughlin will preside over a memorial ceremony for Mr. Plyler at Antioch Baptist Church on Monday, August 28, 2023, at 10 a.m. The burial will take place at the cemetery of the Antioch Baptist Church. His family includes his wife, Lancaster native Diane McGuirt Plyler, as well as their children and spouses: daughter Amber Plyler-Gray and husband Larry of Lancaster, son C. Andrew Plyler and fiancee Savannah, both of Lancaster, and brother Clifford Plyler of Treadway, Tennessee. Mr. Plyler’s first wife, Susan Pat Clark Plyler, son, John Alexander Plyler, and sister, Peggy Lucas, all predeceased him, as did his parents.
On Sunday, August 27, 2023, the family will greet visitors from 3 to 5 pm at Lancaster Funeral Home. Donations in his memory may be sent to the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office, P.O. Box 908, Lancaster, SC 29721, the Antioch Baptist Church, 1734 Antioch Church Road, Lancaster, SC 29720, or the Hospitality House of Charlotte, 1400 Scott Ave, Charlotte, NC 28203. The Plyler family has entrusted their care to Lancaster Funeral Home & Cremation Service
