(PINPOINT WEATHER) — Rain, snow and a wintry mix will impact us this morning from our mountain counties into uptown as a low-pressure system tracks east towards the Carolinas. This will likely lead to a wet and icey morning commute for many returning to work this morning.
A Winter Storm Warning is in effect for Ashe, Avery, & Watauga counties through this afternoon and evening as sleet will likely transition into snow later today. We can see between one and two inches of snow for elevations above 3500 feet.
We’ll hold on to a Winter Weather Advisory for the I-40 corridor and the foothill of North Carolina as sleet and snow taper off later this morning. We’ll likely see all rain for points south of I-40 heading into Uptown.
Temperatures are in the 30s this morning with cloudy skies and wet weather limiting the amount of cooling we’ve seen overnight. After the rain tapers off clouds make way for pockets of sunshine as temperatures make a run for the low 50s. Winds will pick up out of the west between 6 and 11 miles per hour but wind gusts can be as fast as 28 miles per hour at times.
A Wind Advisory will be in effect for our mountain counties this afternoon through Tuesday morning with 55-mile-per-hour wind gusts possible for some of our highest elevations. Much colder temperatures will settle in courtesy of the breezy conditions.
Look for highs to settle in the 40s and overnight lows to dip into the 20s all week long before the rain and potential snow mix back in for the end of the work week and the start of the weekend.
Today: Wet & Icy Morning with Mostly Cloudy Skies and Cool Temps. High: 51.
Tonight: Partly Cloudy, Windy, & Frigid. Low: 26
