CHARLOTTE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — Hundreds of protesters marched in Uptown Charlotte Monday afternoon, angry over an ongoing legal battle involving a challenge of 60,000 ballots cast in the November election for a state Supreme Court race.
Republican Jefferson Griffin and the North Carolina GOP continue to argue that those ballots should be tossed out because voters failed to properly register. Multiple recounts showed Griffin lost to Democratic incumbent Justice Allison Riggs by 734 votes.
Earlier in February, Griffin’s lawyers made their case before a Wake County Judge, arguing that “It’s impossible to assess the integrity of an election when the agency that manages the election isn’t forthcoming with information to determine the accuracy of election results.”

The Judge ruled in favor of the State Board of Elections, saying Riggs’s win should stand. Griffin’s team is now working on an appeal.
In Uptown Monday, Riggs’ supporters argued Griffin cannot accept the results of a free and fair election and is instead trying to disenfranchise voters to secure a seat on the state’s highest court.

Laphaedra Howard told a crowd gathered at the Government center that her husband and several of her friends were among the 60,000 voters whose ballots were challenged.

“How dare you attempt to discount our votes…you are a judge and should know better. At this point, you need to concede,” she said.
North Carolina’s GOP issued a statement to Queen City News following Monday’s protests:
“Just like Democrats protesting in Congress against DOGE responsible government spending, North Carolina Democrats today are protesting against following the law and counting the legal votes of North Carolina citizens. For months, no one has been able to mount a defense for the State Board of Elections on the merits of these cases, turning to fearmongering and incendiary rhetoric designed to threaten those who care about election integrity.”
It is expected Griffin’s appeal will eventually reach the State Supreme Court. There’s no word yet on when the case will be heard in another North Carolina courtroom.
